CNUC Appoints Dr. Rich Hauer to Director of Urban Forestry

CNUC is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Richard (Rich) Hauer as Director of Urban Forestry, effective September 2022. His hiring comes at a time of strategic growth opportunities for CNUC’s urban forestry services. Dr. Hauer is an urban forestry authority and is at the forefront of research and development in the field. He will work to oversee projects throughout North America.

Dr. Hauer brings over three decades of experience to CNUC and holds a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in urban forestry. As an early career professional, he worked as a practicing arborist and urban forestry consultant. As a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester, he managed the Minnesota Shade Tree Program, among other concentrations. Dr. Hauer has served as a Professor of Urban Forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for the past two decades, and he remains academically active.

He served as president of the Arboricultural Research & Education Academy, Minnesota Society of Arboriculture, and Wisconsin Arborist Association. Dr. Hauer has chaired many professional and academic committees. He received the 2016 and 2022 Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship, and Service Highest Award from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Other accomplishments include the 2018 L.C. Chadwick Award for Arboricultural Research, International Society of Arboriculture and most recently the 2022 Honorary Life Member Highest Award from the Wisconsin Arborist Association.

Dr. Hauer is co-author of the Urban Forestry: Planning and Managing Urban Greenspaces textbook. He is prominent in urban forestry research with over 180 publication credits. He also serves as an associate editor of the journal Urban Forestry & Urban Greening. He speaks regularly at conferences in North America and internationally and has delivered over 450 professional presentations.

Dr. Hauer will serve as the primary contact for CNUC urban forestry matters and will oversee the program. He will also continue to provide support to CNUC’s research and development department in developing and implementing future utility and urban forestry surveys, in addition to helping write the reports.
